The island of Sardinia lies roughly equidistant from the Italian mainland and the Tunisian coast. In his classic travel book Sea and Sardinia, D.H. Lawrence described it as "lost between Europe and Africa, and belonging to nowhere." This sentiment was echoed by fortysomething Martini, who has been coming to Sardinia from Rome since she was a child. "It feels like a place apart," she said. "We always came on the ferry, and to us kids it was like arriving in a whole new land."

One of Carlin's favorite hotels in the world is Hotel Romazzino in Sardinia.

Can you blame her? Just look at that water!

Looking for the perfect Italian cocktail? Look no further than a Blood Orange Campari Apertif.

Makes 1 drink.
Ingredients:
1.5 ounces (1 jigger shot) freshly-squeezed blood orange juice
1 ounce (1 pony shot) Campari
about 4-5 ounces Prosecco, to top
1 wedge blood orange, to garnish
In a champagne flute, combine the blood orange juice and Campari. With a small spoon, gently stir. Top with Prosecco, refilling after a few seconds to ensure a full glass. Garnish with a blood orange wedge.

Katrina’s Creative Process:

Step 1 - FALL IN LOVE
My first step, and the origin of everything thereafter, is the act of falling in love with either beauty, curiosity or cause. This may be as simple as my first encounter with wattleseed, a food staple of the Aboriginal culture, the beauty of Antoní Gaudí’s cathedral, La Sagrada Família or the women of Afghanistan working in a beauty parlour.

Step 2 - INSPIRATION
With love there is no thought - only feeling - and it inevitably floats me to the next step of inspiration. A moment of transparency comes and the inspiration transforms into a vision of connectivity to my craft. Listening carefully, I hear the vision with clarity, allowing me to translate the love into my medium of chocolate storytelling.

Step 3 - ACTION
The action is not just dreaming and leaving the thoughts in the clouds, but actually DOING something to physically create the idea. It is the pivotal moment. I act so as not to lose the idea to the fires that flare up around me in a moment’s notice. I take action to create the collection out of dire need for it to tangibly exist. It is never perfect, for if it were it would never be born.

Step 4 - EXPERIENCE
Finally, there is the experience. The inspiration, ingredients and story create the final experiential interaction of each product with YOU. You embark upon your personal, sensory journey: the loosening of the ribbon and lifting of the boxes, the dissemination of a message, the interpretation of new parfums and the connection with your senses. If due to this experience, you stop and think about something in a new light, open your mind to a novel idea and possibly create through your medium, then this is a success.

Meet Carlin's beloved friend, Paul Douglas....

Paul embodies the following words: Superfly. Empathic & Fun. Carlin gave (and insists he wear) this reflective gear. It keeps Paul safer.

Paul's brother is Clayton. Carlin calls them Brotherdogs.

Paul and Carlin are both "townies." Homeboy & Homegirl :)

Paul rides a bike. He was hurt in a work related accident. This is Paul's 2nd favorite bike. He #1 favorite was stolen by a thoughtless, unknown person.

Paul took in stride. He was sad but he decorated his #2 bike.

Paul was a true blue, mind-boggling track star. What a modest winner of life!

Paul brings Carlin thoughtfully insightful beautiful gifts.

The most cherished gift handed to Carlin is trust. One book. Pictures. Poems. Awards. Thoughts. Wishes. And most importantly hand written prayers of gratitude to the Lord. This is Paul's own documentary of his life.

Paul is in the hospital. Handsome man. He tells Carlin, "Everything is going to be lovely." Carlin believes him.

And that will be the title of the future book: "Everything is Going to be Lovely."

Off to Italy!!

Not really, but with this gorgeous spring weather and warm sunshine, memories of Positano are fresh in Carlin's mind.

Il San Pietro Di Positano

Limoncello is the PERFECT summer liqueur, but make your batch soon -- it has to soak for 40 days. Italians sip this after-dinner drink in small, chilled ceramic cups. Salute!

Limoncello 

Peel 7 lemons.
Soak them in 2 pints pure alcohol (vodka works well) for 40 days.
Filter and mix the resulting liquid with just over 3 pints water and 2.2 lbs sugar.
Heat on stove and bring to a boil. Leave it to cool before bottling.
Serve chilled.
This will keep in the refrigerator for several weeks or in the freezer for months.

Carlin knows her art. So it was no surprise to me to walk into the shop and see some amazing pieces for sale. These are gorgeous, big, juicy art statements. Molly Ledbetter is an up and coming artist living in the fine city of Nashville.

These are four examples of Molly's work. The originals for sale in Carlin's shop are "Dark Holler" and "Grasshopper Pie." The computer screen hardly does this art justice. They are so much more spectacular in person!

From the artist:

I am interested in the idea that one can feel nostalgia for something one never actually had. What is that about? What does nostalgia do and how does it operate? I think nostalgia exists where loss and beauty intersect, and I think in all my work there is an undercurrent of loss and beauty, and a struggle to define that point of intersection.

Topically my work appears to be engaged in a dialogue about color, line, and texture, reveal and non-reveal. When I paint I am thinking simple thoughts. Intuition informs the way my body moves. My studio is filled only with what it takes to make the work and little else because when I am working nothing else interests me. I am often impatient. I vacillate between moments of intense energy, self-doubt, celebration, mindfulness, and release.

My work is very much process-driven. I like to give myself a repeated form in which to let color take center stage. I think without realizing it I have been struggling with painting's limitations, or I have been trying to figure out why they are with regard to how I work, and whether these limitations are even important to me.

What are my subjects? I thought I would paint the thing itself. The moon works as a trope in the way I mean, so I’ll paint the moon. Something happens to my brain and heart when I see music live, particularly outdoors and in the summertime, and so I’ll paint the concert lights. But none of this felt real. None of it could really close the gap between experience, that familiar heart-feeling when my heart feels overwhelmed, and the realization that as I was experiencing the thing I was also loosing it. And none of it could address the question of whether or not any of that really mattered.

If I could make a painting that felt like what the sun feels like then I might feel I as on the right track. I am searching for the moment when head and heart align; when loss (when what is lost) becomes beautiful and visa versa. I like what Amy Sillman says, that you should do two things at once: what you do and what you don’t do. My work is about exploring that point of intersection.

How can I contain all of this that I feel? How can I make sense of it? Where is the beauty in all that is lost? These are things I think about. They are simple questions, and yet they are perhaps the most essential.

Through the years, having another baby and living with linen herself, Carlin discovered first hand how fabulous linen can be. Her favorite (after trying several brands) is LIBECO. Beautiful scenery.... magical and enchanting.

Belgium is quite the special place to Carlin and her children*. (*What word does one use for 'children' when said kids are now 23 and 19??)

Who doesn't love the funnies? Make an effort to see the Belgian Comic Strip Center!

The BELGIAN COMIC STRIP CENTER

In the land of Smurfs and Tintin, visitors can discover a range of permanent exhibitions, illustrated with original comic strip drawings and unique objects. Simultaneously, there are also several temporary exhibitions on display.

But the Belgian Comic Strip Center is also the former Waucquez Warehouse, a gem of Art Nouveau by grand master Victor Horta (1906). Open every day (except on Monday) from 10 am to 6 pm.

A visit to Brussels would not be complete without seeing the ever-famous Manneken Pis!

The Manneken Pis was designed by Jerome Duquesnoy and put in place in 1618 or 1619. The famous statue is located at the junction of Rue de l'Étuve/Stoofstraat and Rue du Chêne/Eikstraat.'
