Not only is linen beautiful to look at, it is good for you! Healthy in all the right ways.

True story -- when Carlin was momma-to-be with her first baby, she went to NY to get linen crib sheets. Better for the baby? More healthy than cotton? Who knew? Carlin just thought they were pretty! Through the years, having another baby and living with linen herself, Carlin discovered first hand how fabulous linen can be. Her favorite (after trying several brands) is LIBECO. Carlin's favorite thing about this place was the nice piano player named Charlie. They must have yummy food, too -- the Walserhof restaurant is world renowned. Christmas-time there is extra special; so beautiful.

Another fabulous alpine getaway is two hours from Zurich. Stay at the Hotel Gasthof Post Lech.

Beautiful scenery.... magical and enchanting.

The Spa

They too have delicious food (and drink! Careful of the Pálinka, it packs a wallop!)

Hitting the slopes? Have fun; we'll probably be in the spa.

Belgium is quite the special place to Carlin and her children*. (*What word does one use for 'children' when said kids are now 23 and 19??)

The city of Brussels holds some of the world's treasures, indeed. Here are some amazing places and favorite spots of the Camp family.

Who doesn't love the funnies? Make an effort to see the Belgian Comic Strip Center!

The BELGIAN COMIC STRIP CENTER

In the land of Smurfs and Tintin, visitors can discover a range of permanent exhibitions, illustrated with original comic strip drawings and unique objects. Simultaneously, there are also several temporary exhibitions on display.

But the Belgian Comic Strip Center is also the former Waucquez Warehouse, a gem of Art Nouveau by grand master Victor Horta (1906). Open every day (except on Monday) from 10 am to 6 pm.

A visit to Brussels would not be complete without seeing the ever-famous Manneken Pis!

The Manneken Pis was designed by Jerome Duquesnoy and put in place in 1618 or 1619. The famous statue is located at the junction of Rue de l'Étuve/Stoofstraat and Rue du Chêne/Eikstraat.'

The soapstone products sold at C.A. Camp and Sannino are from Alberene, Virginia which is where Carlin's family farm is located. Her Virginia roots are deep, hundreds of years. Alberene is where her father's family set down these roots, way back when. Her loyalty to and

belief in Alberene soapstone in unwavering.

The Story Of Alberene Stone

There was located and opened in Albemarle County, Virginia, in the late 1870's and early 1880's, a deposit of stone of peculiar and remarkable qualities. It was weather-proof, heat-proof, time-proof and easily worked – as was proved by Indian bowls and other utensils carved from this material with crude tools of the early aborigines and to be seen today in public museums and private collections. While soft enough to be easily shaped and fabricated, it yet was so dense and close-grained as to have a crushing strength equal to that of granite. It was non-absorbent and non-staining; and, in chemical characteristics, it was acid-proof and alkali-proof.

A Company is Formed
The pioneer in opening and developing this deposit was Mr. John G. Porter Who early saw the commercial possibilities of a material possessing all these unique qualities. Thoroughly convinced of the large potential markets in the industrial, architectural and scientific worlds, he associated himself with a number men in an organization which later became known as the Alberene Stone Company, with Mr. D. J. Carroll as president; and this material has since been quarried and marketed continuously, for more than 80 years, by this organization under the name “Alberene Stone.”

Where better to sit and read a magazine? Wouldn't you love to have this be the place you go everyday for work?!

Carlin's shop -- lucky her -- happens to be next to one of her favorite businesses in all of Charlottesville:

WG Clark Architects.

Why is this a favorite of Carlin's? Because she loves WG and Josh and because her dream as a little girl was to be an architect. (Moving to Europe and getting married and having babies somehow prevented those dreams from materializing....)

Being next to an amazing architect's office has rekindled her love for architecture and at this point in her life is the next best thing to being one herself!

Carlin's love for WG Clark runs deep. How could it not...he brings her lunch (with a dessert!) most every day, lets her play with with models, teaches her to draw in perspective and understands her thirst for his trade.

He answers all her questions and has proven to be her favorite architect on the planet.

This bit here gives a little more information on WG and not only what a great architect he is, but also a great visionary:

"Asked what his dream job would be, Clark points to the Habitat for Humanity multi-unit complex he designed for a SECCA (Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art) competition. His intention is to form a community (as opposed to a neighborhood) with different size options to accommodate different sized households and a variety of design choices available to the residents. A green structure, power would be supplied by photovoltaic strips on the roof, which is slanted so water runs off into a channel in the central courtyard to be collected into a reservoir. This water is used for irrigation of the communal vegetable beds that take the place of lawn. The structure seems to sum up what’s Clark’s about: it’s low impact, democratic, and stripped down to the bare essentials, it is a triumph of graceful design."

W.G. Clark was born in Louisa, Virginia, and studied architecture at the University of Virginia. He began architectural practice in Charleston, South Carolina in 1974. He won several national competitions including the New Orleans Museum of Art competition in 1983.

Mr. Clark was appointed design critic at Harvard Graduate School of Design in 1987. In 1998 he was appointed chairman of Architecture at the University of Virginia where he now teaches design. He was named Edmund Schureman Campbell Professor in 1989.

Mr. Clark’s work has been widely published and is the subject of Richard Jensen’s book, Clark and Menefee. He was included in “40 under 40” by the Architectural League of New York and twice listed in Time magazine as one of America’s best designers. His work has received three National Design awards from the American Institute of Architects: Middleton Inn, Reid House and Croffead House.

However, also in the office is Josh Stastny who has intuitively guessed Carlin's love of certain architecture and turned her on to architect extraordinaire Rick Joy. She will be forever grateful. (Plus, Josh is the one who lets Carlin play with those little trees for the models.)

“The desert is a fantastic place in the most correct meaning of the word; it is at times a dreamlike fantasy of a landscape. . . . the desert’s beauty extends beyond objects and things to an atmosphere of place that is defined by quality of light and other sensory kinds of input.
Attention to sensory stimulation, what Joy calls “ethereal, visceral experiences,” guides his design work to such an extent that it often “preempts consideration of the formal aspects of a project. Sounds, smells and tactile qualities are often more important than the shape of the object itself.” Owing to this focus on sensory experience Joy’s architecture, while undeniably rooted in Modernism, avoids the coldness sometimes associated with the style. “To this day,” Joy said proudly, “several of my clients don’t believe they have modern architecture projects.”

“I think I can read a place pretty well, because of my experience in the desert,” said Joy who suggested that he may some day return to his native Maine. “For now I promise to keep it up and to really make this work worth it and to do great projects in the future. It’s really just about loving life.”

One such woman has caught our recent attention, thanks to the fantastic article in Vanity Fair.

Agnès B. started designing clothes after a stint at Elle magazine where she was "hired as a junior fashion editor." She designed clothes for various design houses until she came to realize that designing for others soon "became boring." Opening her own shop in an obscure location in Paris, the renowned Agnès B. was born. She started making clothes inspired by workers' uniforms. Dyeing them different colors in her workroom, these uniform-like, all cotton clothes proved to be winners. So popular, in fact, people were buying them wet out of the dye vat.

Where are your clothes made now?

In France as much as possible, but it’s a lot more expensive. A minute of work is 70 times less expensive in Thailand. And in Europe it’s way cheaper if you go to Czech Republic, Lithuania, or Romania. I would make much more money if I produced abroad, that’s what the others do. I recently found out that I order more than anyone else in France, and I only have 200 stores, not 2000! That goes to show that the other designers are simply not producing in France.

And you don’t advertise.

Yes, so our customers don’t have to pay for the adverts. I don’t advertise because of my connection to May '68. To me adverts are stupid and make people stupid. I don't like the manipulation. Now, there are adverts everywhere in Paris. You can’t look at the city in the same way.

Agnès lives in a 6 bedroom villa which neighbors Versailles. She is one of the richest self-made women in France, and it is reported that she has no idea how much money she makes per year. She shares and gives, loves young people and art, her family and her work.

Sounds amazingly like someone I know!

Perhaps the reason for the success of Agnès B. is her philosophy, which I believe is summed up here:

Backstory: With a doctorate in anthropology from UC Berkeley, Borja took inspiration from her travels and study, and began making clothing in 2001, starting with her own graduation dress. She's shown at San Francisco Fashion Week and been featured in many magazines. She started with ruffled fleece coats and dresses and more recently added higher-end fabrics to her ruffly repertoire.

Vibe: "Project Runway" workshop. Lived-in studio space with drafting tables, fabric swatches everywhere, two sewing machines; a small, well-stocked retail space takes up the front of the workroom.

The goods: Ruffled wool tartan and fleece skirts, jackets and coats; bamboo yoga clothes, bias-cut dresses with asymmetrical hemlines, long evening coats, boleros, wraps and scarves, and baby and children's clothing ($95-$600).

Clientele: The non-minimal stylista with an arty bent.

Signature item: Long ruffle-edged skirt or jacket, in fleece, or for fall, wool tartan.

For the most part, people are lovely. For the most part, Carlin finds joy in being around all types of people; entertaining and socializing, hosting and playing. But there are times when, like many of us, she needs to be alone. She needs time to reflect, time to exhale and time to just be.

And sometimes when the need for solitude hits, she takes jaunts. You know, getting on a plane and flying to a destination a couple of air hours away. One of her favorite get-aways, a great place to spend the day alone is at the

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston.

Oh, the joy of being in a museum! The history, the grandeur, the feeling of being transported somewhere else.... and trust, the Isabella Stewart Gardner museum does not disappoint.

After inheriting $1.6 million from her late father in 1891, Isabella Stewart Gardner began collecting art from around the world. She opened the museum to the public in 1903.

Mrs. Gardner was well traveled and was, in her time, "one of the foremost female patrons of the arts. She was a patron and friend of leading artists and writers of her time, including John Singer Sargent, James McNeill Whistler, and Henry James."
